On Saturday, April 2, 2016, as part of continuing efforts towards creating a healthier school community, more than 80 Hollywood High School students and their families, faculty, staff, LAUSD Board President Steve Zimmer, Councilmember Mitch O’Farrell (13th District), and former Councilmember Tom LaBonge, among others, came together for the 3rd annual “Sheik-a-thon,” a rigorous four-mile hike in Griffith Park up one of the trails towards the Hollywood Sign in celebration of health, community and partnership.
LAUSD Board President Steve Zimmer, who made closing remarks, stated, “This event is one of my favorite fundraisers because it shows students advocating for and participating in healthy behaviors.”
Donning bright red t-shirts, students boarded buses at the high school and were transported to Griffith Park for a short kick-off ceremony marked by inspiring speeches (Councilmembers O’Farrell and La Bonge), the presentation of awards, a series of group stretches, and the hike was on! Once at the summit, folks posed for photos, hugged, danced and cheered their accomplishment and the vista. Back at the starting point, Chef E and Frank (Healthy Eats Produce and Catering) treated everyone to delicious and healthy picnic.
Funded as part of Kaiser Permanente’s Healthy Eating, Active Living (HEAL) Zones to The L.A. Trust, the Sheik-a-thon is just one of several HEAL initiatives happening across the Hollywood High campus thanks largely to “buy in” from Principal Alejandra Sanchez and The L.A. Trust for Children’s Health. Deborah Ebrahemi, The L.A. Trust’s HEAL Program Manager elaborated. “The weight room is now open to students during lunchtime, there are Zumba and nutrition classes for parents, a faculty walking club, and F.A.M.E. (Fit, Active, Motivated and Empowered) a student- led, peer-focused club that implements health campaigns and outreach on campus. It’s been a real privilege over the past 3 years for us to get to work so closely with the amazing students and administration of this school, and to witness the changes we are seeing on campus. Now we are working to spread this movement to other LAUSD campuses!”
All funds raised through the Sheik-a-thon go to benefit Hollywood High’s efforts of sustaining healthy eating and active living programs.
