“Universal Screening/Fluoride Varnish” Program Flourishes at Nevin, San Pedro Elementary Schools

On October 30, as part of our Oral Health Initiative, 328 children were dentist-screened and fluoride-varnished at Nevin Avenue Elementary School. Our partner-dentist from Eisner Pediatric & Family Medical Center discovered 16 of these children in need of immediate care. All were given on-the-spot referrals to medical/dental services. The program continues on Nov. 21st at San Pedro Elementary and then onto 6 more LAUSD schools. To learn more about our Oral Health Initiative, click here.

LAUSD 5K “Move It” Challenge and Health Festival

Although the numbers are still coming in, it is safe to say the 5K “Move It” event and health festival at Dodger Stadium on Saturday, November 16th was a huge success! Thousands of runners, walkers, and rollers made their 3 laps around the outside of the stadium, hundreds of little ones participated in a 1K race, and everyone was exposed to healthy activities, information, and fun give-aways. The L.A. Trust was a proud partner in the event bringing awareness of our new Wellness Centers and the comprehensive health services they provide LAUSD students, families and their communities! LA Trust Receives $2.9M over 3 Years from First 5 LA!

The LA Trust received a $2.9 million dollar grant over three years to develop the Early Childhood Linkage to Wellness program which will support Student Health and Human Services staff to develop referral and linkage to the Wellness network with the local Best Start and 0-5 programs in our schools communities.  It will also pay for pediatric training and children’s furniture for the Wellness Centers at 6 sites including Locke Early Ed Center, Elizabeth Learning Center, Carson, Jefferson, Washington Prep, and Belmont High Schools. Click here  to read full press release.

School Heath Clinics In Los Angeles Serve Low-Income Communities, Reap Revenue For Kids

LOS ANGELES — When Maria Barrales’ children got sick, she would drive two hours south from her East Los Angeles home to the Mexican border and spend two more hours waiting to cross so she could go to an affordable doctor in Tijuana.

Now, Barrales, who does not have health insurance, can walk a couple of blocks to Garfield High School and see a modestly priced physician at a new health clinic converted from an auto shop on the school grounds.

“This is something so necessary here. A lot of people don’t have insurance, and they don’t have the means to go to Tijuana,” she said in Spanish.

The clinic is one of 14 new “wellness centers” that the Los Angeles Unified School District is rolling out this year at schools in impoverished neighborhoods in an initiative that expands the mission of traditional school-based health centers from treating only students into one that treats the general public, too… READ MORE

LAUSD among 10 organizations in L.A. County to receive HRSA funding.

Congratulations to the ten organizations in L.A. County that were awarded a Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) school-based health center grants—including LAUSD’s award of $300,000 for the purchase of equipment at six sites. The grants, which are made possible by the Affordable Care Act, will allow school-based health centers to continue the expansion of preventive and primary health care services to children and adolescents throughout the county.Click here to see the full list of school-based health center grant awards and HRSA’s press release.

Another wonderful and well-established partnership to celebrate. LAUSD and Asian Pacific Health Care Venture celebrated the opening of the new 5,200 square feet Belmont Wellness Center. If you want to see beautiful green walled exam rooms, visiting this site is a must!

Garfield Wellness Center opened on November 29.

It was a true community celebration when many gathered for the grand opening of the Garfield Wellness Center. Bienvenidos is the medical provider there–offering comprehensive preventative care and mental health services. A big thanks to the Garfield Parent and Family Center for the wonderful food at the reception and creating the beautiful flower arrangements.

Wellness Centers Openings

The LA Trust is pleased to announce the opening of the first two LAUSD Wellness Centers: Jefferson High School and Carson High School. Both grand opening events were well-attended with LAUSD officials and staff, clinic staff, parents, students, community members, and elected officials, including Congresswoman Lucille Roybal-Allard and LA County Supervisor Mark Ridley-Thomas.
