I am excited about utilizing the opportunities presented by health care reform in the LAUSD context to participate in helping to move thinking regarding integrated mental health services from the focus on concern about costs to an appreciation of how effective mental health services generate significant value. I also appreciate the incredible conjunction of rigorous thinking applied across the spectrum from macro to micro, the commitment of resources, and inspired, dedicated talent to one of the most worthy efforts I can imagine.

George Chacon

I choose to serve on the board because the work that The L.A. Trust does reminds me of the help I received when I was a junior at Marshall High School. My parents did not have the resources or the means to take me to a doctor on a regular basis. I believe that The L.A. Trust continues a legacy of ensuring the success and future of Los Angeles’ youth.

Mr. Chacon currently serves as SPACE Project Director. A graduate of LAUSD’s Marshall High School, in 2012-13 He worked closely with The L.A. Trust helping the Student Engagement team to help establish the Trust’s first Youth Advisory Board — student representatives from each Wellness Center site. He graduated from
UCLA in 2010 with a B.A. International Development Studies, and a Minor in Education Studies.

Joanna Mimi Choi, MD, MPH

As a pediatrician with a passion for working with underserved communities to transform health, I jumped at the opportunity to help The L.A. Trust disrupt and deliver comprehensive health care to children where they benefit from it the most. Through my work on the Board of Directors, I hope to further improve LAUSD Wellness Center outcomes, strengthen partnerships and synergies with the schools and community partners, and help promote this model as one that should be replicated more broadly throughout the state and across the country.

Dr. Choi is a pediatrician with a passion for working with underserved communities to transform health at a population and environmental level. Born and raised in the Bay Area, she studied cross cultural issues in health policy as a Human Biology major at Stanford University. She then discovered the preventative potential of pediatrics as a medical student at Harvard and returned to California to do her residency in the Pediatric Leadership for the Underserved Program at UCSF. Mimi then moved to Los Angeles to pursue a Maternal Child Health Fellowship at UCLA while also working as a pediatrician and medical director at St. John’s Well Child and Family Center in South Los Angeles. She recently transitioned to a teaching role at Olive View-UCLA Medical Center where she focuses on imbuing a comprehensive systems-based approach to patient care into the next generation of medical students and pediatric residents. Outside of work, Mimi enjoys going on adventures with her wonderful husband and one-year old daughter, trying all the great food in Los Angeles, and staying active through yoga, hiking, and swimming.

Jan Kern, MA

I have been active with The L.A. Trust since 2002.  The reason I am committed to the work of the Trust is that I feel it is right for each and every child in Los Angeles, particularly those who attend school in LAUSD, to be healthy.  We are creating a national model for health care for children and their families.

In addition to providing greater access to health services for children and their families, I am hoping that The L.A. Trust will acquire the data to prove that student health = student success.  With the ability to make the case, the Trust will be able to participate in more public policy initiatives.  I also hope for more visibility as a national model for student health.

Jan Kern is the Founding President of The Los Angeles Trust for Children’s Health; consultant to Southern California Grantmakers and to Valley Nonprofit Resources; and Senior Advisor at HersheyCause.

With more than 25 years experience in the philanthropic and nonprofit sector, she has served in a variety of leadership and management positions. Since 2004 Ms. Kern has focused on family philanthropy and currently leads two peer-learning groups for Southern California Grantmakers. As a consultant, she continues to guide nonprofit organizations particularly in the areas of board development and planning.

She has been a founding board member of several nonprofit organizations and continues to provide leadership on selected boards and community initiatives.
