Statistics

  • South Bay is one of the areas with high concentration of children (0-17 in age) with asthma. Accordingly, we have focused our efforts primarily in the San Pedro/Wilmington. About 43,000 children have asthma, according to LA County Department of Public Health. (Data attached)
  • At the LAUSD, about 63,000 students have asthma.
  • About 1 in 10 children have asthma, making it the most common chronic condition for children.

The Los Angeles Trust for Children’s Health and its Works on Asthma

Thanks to the Harbor Community Benefits Foundation, we have funded programs to :

  • Reduce exacerbations in the San Pedro/Wilmington area
  • Coordinate CME/CEU trainings for healthcare providers and clinicians on EPR-3 guidelines with support from LAC+USC Breathmobile Program and Torrance Memorial Medical Center
  • Conduct in-home environmental assessments and provide asthma kits (air filters, green cleaning supplies, spacers, etc.)
  • Educate and build awareness for guardians so they can manage their children’s asthma
  • Support LAUSD District Nursing with screening and management of asthmatic students

  • Reduce indoor triggers
  • Request to have an Asthma Action Plan completed from your provider, and provide a photocopy to your school nurse
    • A written request or consent for your child to self-carry their inhaler
  • Visit one of our Wellness Centers to receive a thorough screening or the LAC + USC Breathmobile Program
