An adult ally is an individual who wholeheartedly believes in the potential of youth to become greater versions of themselves. They are supportive mentors who encourage participation, positive development, and organization in their students. They also listen, learn and appreciate young people’s assets.
In our context, an adult ally could be a teacher, school district staff member (healthy start coordinator) or Wellness Center staff. These individuals are entrusted with recruiting and establishing student advisory boards, holding regular meetings, and supporting youth with health awareness campaigns. Student engagement uses a positive youth development model and provides a safe and inclusive environment for students to flourish.
