Youth Advisory Board

Purpose

The L.A. Trust Youth Advisory Board (YAB) is a collective of young leaders from across The L.A. Trust Wellness Network. Guided by the principles of the Youth Empowered Solutions (YES!) Youth Empowerment Model, students work collaboratively to improve the health and wellness of their school campus and their communities.

The YAB’ers, participate in a series of training throughout the year focused on a systems-level approach to making a change and building advocacy skills. They utilize strategic opportunities to impact their community and inform the public of their work through presentations to The L.A. Trust Board of Directors, LAUSD School Board and participation in legislative visits.

Why did you join YAB?
I had a spark of interest to be part of YAB during the Y2Y conference last school year. The idea of reaching out to those in need especially in terms of mental health is something that I am very passionate about. In our world today, there are so many stigmas regarding mental health, and being a part of YAB serves as the bridge to create a community that is knowledgeable of such issue.

What are the changes you hope to make at your school?
Being in a culturally diverse school such as Belmont High School, I aim to unite the student body and stand up to issues regarding health and the environment because as the youth, are voices needed to be heard. I also want to ensure that students are aware and makes good use of the wellness center provided in our area.

What activities are you looking forward to this school year?
The activities that I am looking forward to the most is the Y2Y conference. Being around fellow students for a greater cause to help our community is absolutely empowering.

What are your plans after high school?
Cherishing my last year in high school, I plan to go to a 4-year university and major in political science. I am chasing my dream to become a lawyer in the near future.

Hollywood High SchoolI joined the YAB to have a greater say in my community. I also wanted to gain a lot of knowledge about leading a healthy lifestyle for my own benefit and my family’s. I hope to create more sources of healthy and delicious food. I believe that the students at my school do not eat as they should because they lack these resources. I would like to provide these for them. I am looking forward to the physical creation of our ideas. I cannot wait to see our ideas be put into action. I plan to attend a four-year university and study political science.

Why did you join the YAB?
I joined the Youth Advisory Board because it seemed like an amazing opportunity to educate students about the resources available to them on campus. There are a lot of students on campus who weren’t even aware of the existence of a Wellness Center at my school and I wanted to change that. Being on the board has also given me the opportunity to expand my own knowledge and explore my creativity in order to implement new projects at Carson High.

What are the changes you hope to make at your school?
I hope to encourage students to use the resources available to them and ensure them that it is a comfortable zone and everything is confidential. I also want to educate students on campus about the importance of using protection and staying healthy. Most importantly, I want to teach students about the importance of the words they use and how words do hurt and can impact others in ways they did not intend to. Overall, I want to guide my peers to a life of wellness and success.

What activities are you looking forward to this school year?
I am looking forward to working with the Psychiatric Social Workers at my school to successfully lead campaigns that both promote the wellness centers and encourage students to look toward a healthier future-both mentally and physically. I am also excited about the Tooth Fairy Convention, and spreading awareness about how to properly care for one’s teeth.

What are your plans after high school?
After high school, I plan to attend a four-year university where I can major in Public Health and secure an internship where I can learn how to communicate effectively and work with other towards the overall health of the general population.

Why did you join the YAB?
I joined the YAB because after I attended the Y2Y Conference last year I was so very fascinated in all that these marvelous people were involved in and I thought to myself I absolutely want in on the production of wellness for all. I felt that if I were to be on the YAB I would certainly meet pals for life and always feel great about all service and preparation that we do as we are helping others. I was certain that the YAB would truly be my chance at making a change in the lives of several others like me.

What are the changes you hope to make at your school?
I hope to get students at my school interested in our Wellness Center so interested that they visit it on the daily. I hope to change the view/vibe that the Wellness Center gives off. I hope to erase all stigma.

What activities are you looking forward to this school year?
I’m looking forward to Color Wars (massive spirit battle) at school this year as I am a senior and we must win against the juniors! I am ready to be crowned a champion. #ClassOf2K17!

Why did you join the YAB?
Ever since elementary school, I’ve always known that I like to be very involved with my community and my surroundings. So when my Academy Lead introduced me to the Youth Advisory Board, I was instantly hooked because not only does this program bring students from various schools together, it also gives you the chance to make changes in your community that truly matter to you.

What are the changes you hope to make at your school?
What I’m really trying to focus on this year, is getting people more excited about Health, whether that’s eating more healthy, or knowing that it’s equally important to take care of yourself physically and mentally.

What activities are you looking forward to this school year?
I’m definitely looking forward to Senior activities this year and finally being able to experience what former seniors have always been excited for!

What are your plans after high school?
I have school’s that I’d like to attend for college, but as of now, I’m not 100% positive where I might end up next year, but I know that what I want to strive to do is get my Bachelor’s in American Sign Language Interpretation, and Deaf Studies.

I joined the YAB because I wanted learn more about health and expand my creativity with fellow students. A few changes I hope to make at my school is for everyone to be informed on how to properly take care of themselves and staying healthy which is what our wellness centers are doing! A big activity I’m looking for is for sure Y2Y! It’s an amazing way for all student advisory boards can get together and meet. We all promote health and it’s really awesome how well they can do workshops! My plans after high school is to go to college and keep learning about health as well teaching others!!
